The Power of the Gennius Pleated Patio System
As a restaurant, café, or commercial property owner, maximising your floor plan is one of the most effective ways to boost revenue. However, unpredictable weather can frequently leave your highly valuable outdoor dining zones completely unusable.
Whether it is the scorching mid-afternoon sun or a sudden downpour, relying on Melbourne’s fickle climate can cost your business heavily in lost bookings. That is exactly where the Gennius Pleated Patio System steps in—a premium retractable shade solution engineered to turn your open-air spaces into year-round, weather-proof profit generators.
To see this architectural marvel in action, look no further than our recently completed installation at Disuko restaurant, situated on Level 3, 59 Bourke St, Melbourne.
Project Spotlight: Disuko Restaurant (Level 3, 59 Bourke St, Melbourne)
Perched high above the bustling city streets, Disuko boasts an incredible rooftop balcony area with stunning urban views. However, an exposed balcony means dealing directly with the elements. Coolabah Shades was brought in to design and install a heavy-duty shading system that seamlessly integrated with the restaurant’s existing structural aesthetic.
Take a look at the transformation through our latest project photos:
The rooftop deck during the early morning preparation stages, showcasing the custom-painted, heavy-duty framework extending seamlessly outward from the building’s facade.
The system fully extended under the crisp Melbourne sun. You can see how the premium, cream-colored pleated fabric sits perfectly taut over the rafters, providing pristine overhead shade while keeping the perimeter beautifully open.
A wide-angle perspective from the ground level of the open deck. The framework cleanly sections off the dining layout without making the rooftop feel cramped, preserving the spacious, airy ambiance that outdoor diners love.
Offers an intimate, under-canopy view of the completed seating area. The elegant pleats softly diffuse the overhead light, creating a warm, inviting, and premium atmosphere for patrons enjoying an afternoon drink or evening meal.
Looking directly up at the heavy-duty structural design. It illustrates the sheer scale of the system and how it neatly covers the modern tiled benches and outdoor dining furniture, ensuring complete protection from both intense UV rays and sudden rain.
Why the Gennius Pleated Patio System is a Game-Changer for Hospitality
The Gennius system isn’t just an awning—it is a motorized, self-supporting framed patio roof designed specifically for high-end residential and heavy-use commercial applications. Here is why it is the ultimate investment for your venue:
1. Massive Coverage with Sleek Engineering
Traditional umbrellas or standard folding arm awnings often struggle to cover wide commercial footprints without requiring a forest of central poles that disrupt your seating layout. The Gennius belt-driven system can span up to 13 meters wide with a 7-meter projection using its own robust framework. Even larger systems can be achieved with extra structural support, giving you an entirely unobstructed floor plan to maximize table turnarounds.
2. Fully Motorized, On-Demand Adaptability
Weather can change in seconds. With an automated, motorized drive system, your staff can fully extend or cleanly retract the fabric at the touch of a button. When the sun is pleasant, your guests can bask in the natural light. If the sun becomes too harsh or the clouds roll in, the fabric glides out smoothly to shield your diners without causing a single interruption to their service.
3. True All-Weather Protection
While standard awnings are purely built for sun protection, the Gennius Pleated Patio system is built tough to withstand harsh winter rain and wind. Its premium fabrics and engineered water management ensure that rain streams safely away from your guests, keeping your outdoor room fully operational 365 days a year.
4. Elevated Architectural Aesthetics
As seen at Disuko, the system adds a distinct European elegance to a property. The beautiful, structured horizontal pleats create a sophisticated, high-end “outdoor room” feeling that attracts foot traffic and elevates your brand’s street presence or rooftop profile.
